AMERICAN WEST’S SOUTHWEST CLASSIC

One of the most exciting American West Southwest Classic races ever is now in the record books. Total entries for the three day event was 847 with a total monies paid of $34,553. Riders from Canada, California, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Wisconsin, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Arizona were present to enjoy our Arizona sunshine!

In addition to the money paid to the contestants, a check payable to the American Cancer Society was $1,040 to benefit a worth while organization. During the three days of barrel racing competition, the riders ran a Standard Pattern with the score line at 60 feet, measured and verified.

Friday’s Open competition started the event with the winning run from Rylea Platts on Frenchman Fever with a time of 17.197. 2nd Place in the Open was Destiny Crane stopping the clock on Solom Sarina with a time of 17.354. Amber Berry on San Cat Hickory was 3rd with a time of 17.395, Shelly Anzick placed 4th riding Soda, time of 17.407, and Tami Semas on Hot N Frosted placed 6th with a time of 17.449.

Saturday’s competition definitely heated up with the bright sunshine throughout the day. Deanne Bain and Dollar started the race as the first rider out of the gate with a 17.136 until the last group of riders in the late afternoon. Lita Scott on Little Richard wowed the crowd with a barrel run to be remembered. Lita stopped the clock at 17.077 to win the first place position. Little Richard took off like a speeding bullet to the first barrel and never attempted to slow down. The mare is a wonder to watch running barrels with Lita on board. Second place moved Deanne Bain to second position with Orla Mae Harvey in third with a time of 17.203. Brittani Brookshire on her trusted mount Taylor finished 4th, with a time of 17.231. Again Destiny Crane was in the top 1D on Solom Sarina with a time of 17.275 finishing 5th. Amber Berry on San Cat Hickory was 6th with 17.354 and Lyndee Stairs riding Little Dan Do It was 7th with a 17.354.

Sunday’s races begin with clear sunny skies after a night of wind and rain. Because Dunn’s Arena is so well maintained it did not deter the spirits of any of the riders.

Kyna Schrader proved that she is to be reckoned with, she and Cruzin For Cash wowed the facility with a outstanding ride and finished the pattern with a 16.958 to take 1st place in the Open Competition. Smooth, Fast, and Precise is how you would call her run. Another fast run was completed by Cammy Fetherston on Timely Perfect stopped the clock at 17.048 to take 2nd place honors. Nalynn Cline and Bar C Beaus Susan were 3rd with a time of 17.281. Tami Semas received another check in the 4th place position riding This Guys Not Kiddin with a time of 17.315. Amber Berry and San Cat Hickory was 5th, time of 17.336 with Tami Seams placing 6th on Hot N Frosted with running time of 17.338.
